The part of Hoi An most sought-after by visitors is its incredibly photogenic mustard-coloured Old Town, a UNESCO-listed collection of beautifully preserved buildings; some of these still function as private homes, while a total of 22 are open to the public and operate largely as museums. Of particular interest are historic merchant residences, some of which offer short guided tours (the Old House of Tan Ky is among the most interesting), and Chinese assembly halls used for gatherings and celebrations by individual ethnic groups. Marzipan's triumphal march began in Lübeck. The factory - still headquartered in Lübeck - was established by Georg Niederegger (1777 - 1856) and is still owned by the Niederegger family. Directly opposite the Town Hall in the heart of the Old Town is the famous Café Niederegger with the marzipan salon. The history of the "harem confectionery" can be found on the second floor and takes the visitor back through the centuries tracing the origins of the almond speciality on its long journey from the orient to Lübeck.

The town of Santa Teresa Gallura is situated on the northernmost tip of the island and has stunning views over the straits of Bonifacio to the island of Corsica. Rena Bianca is the town’s beach, and you can find it only a stone’s throw from the centre, with turquoise water and flour-fine sand. Just to the west, on the headland Capo Testa, there are two beaches. The left hand side is beautiful and ideal for children, and the beach on the right is also beautiful with amazing rock formations. Ferries leave daily for a 50 minute trip to cross the Straits to the town of Bonifacio, in Corsica. This is perfect for a great day out, having French lunch and doing some shopping.
