Banner Elk is accessed by way of the Asheville Regional Airport, which is 80 miles south of Banner Elk itself. AVL services American, Delta, Continental, United and US Airways. Vision and AirTran both offer seasonal flights to Destin and Orlando. Ground transportation services are provided by taxis, buses, limousines, car service and rental cars. Another way of reaching Avery County is also Blue Ridge Parkway, running the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains from Virginia to Western North Carolina.

As with most of western North Carolina, Avery County presents a continental climate characterized by high percentage of humidity, which makes the perceived temperature quite cold during the winter and specially hot from June to August. The weeks spanning January to March are definitely the perfect period for winter sport lovers, while the period from May to September would be perfect for open air activities like hiking, trekking or fishing. Summer is also the part of the year when the majority of folk festivals takes place, like the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games.Don't underestimate the beauty of autumn in High Country, and the spectacular landscapes and colors you can admire on the slopes of Blue Ridge Mountains.
