Memling Now: Hans Memling in contemporary art

Memling Now: Hans Memling in contemporary art

Hans Memling was one of the most significant painters of the Burgundian Bruges genre. He painted three altarpieces for the medieval Sint-Janshospitaal. These are considered to be masterpieces amongst the artwork of the Flemish primitives. The world-renowned Ursula Shrine is also one of his works. Hans Memling is a source of inspiration for various contemporary artists and this Bruges exhibition highlights his influences for the first time. As well as a range of portraits by Joseph Kosuth – one of the forefathers of conceptual art – there will also be works on display by African-American painter Kehinde Wiley (who painted an official portrait of Barack Obama) and Syrian-American artist Diana Al-Hadid. Belgian artist David Claerbout will also be creating a new piece of work for this project.

выставка Simon Stevin, 1620-2020

выставка Simon Stevin, 1620-2020

Bruges-born scientist Simon Stevin (1548-1620) moved to the present-day Netherlands around 1571 and eventually became counsellor to Prince Maurits. By looking at things from a fresh perspective, Stevin constantly enriched new fields of study, such as hydraulic engineering, navigation, accountancy, physics, military science, architecture, urban development, political sciences and mathematics. He always formulated his ideas in Dutch, in response to concrete questions from the army commanders, engineers and political leaders of his day. For the first time, an exhibition in the City Archive will bring together all his works and manuscripts, as well as other published works about him, allowing the story of his life to be told from A to Z. Visitors will also learn more about his statue on the Simon Stevinplein (the square in Bruges named after him) and how his insights and discoveries are still affect our lives today.

Триеннале в Брюгге в 2018 году

Триеннале в Брюгге в 2018 году

Фестиваль современного искусства и архитектуры в Брюгге Every three years the Bruges Triennial brings contemporary art and architecture to the historic city centre of Bruges: a unique setting and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 2015 it has built further on the series of triennials that were put together in 1968, 1971, and 1974 and brought visual arts into the public domain. In each edition, the artistic team invites national and international artists and architects to submit new temporary installations. Some dozen of these works of art and meeting places engage in an active dialogue with their surroundings: alongside waterways, in cobbled streets, in peaceful places of worship, or on vacant lots. For visitors, it will be a summer-long exploration, following a unique and inviting trail with a social aspect.
