Pamukkale, located in western Turkey, is famous for its mineral-rich thermal waters and striking white terraces. Its name translates to 'cotton castle,' a reference to the bright travertine formations created by mineral deposits from the hot springs. As the water flows from the summit, around 320 metres high, it forms a series of natural pools that look almost otherworldly. If you’re staying in Izmir, Pamukkale makes an excellent day trip. The journey takes roughly 2.5 hours by bus or private car, and many travellers opt to join an organised tour for convenience. Setting off early in the morning is advisable so you can enjoy the site fully and avoid the midday crowds.

The National Monument, or Monas, rises from the centre of Merdeka Square as a symbol of Indonesia’s independence. Visitors can take a lift to the viewing deck for wide views over the city or explore the museum at its base, which traces the country’s struggle for freedom. The surrounding park is a favourite spot for locals to stroll, grab street food, or rest in the shade.

This massive exhibition space is a pleasant 3km walk from the city centre. Its surface area of more than 16,000 square metres facilitates large scale, high-quality exhibitions in a bright and airy space. The Museum is free to enter and there is a cafeteria-restaurant on site.

Solliden is the summer residence of the Swedish royal family, which they visit several times a year. Commissioned by Queen Victoria, on the advice of her doctor Axel Munthe, and with Mediterranean influences, the palace was completed in 1906. Munthe was of the opinion that Öland’s abundant sunshine and oxygen-rich air would improve her health, and to this day the royals are happy to enjoy Öland’s sun! Solliden Palace is open to visitors throughout the summer months. Visitors have free access to most of the parks. Café, shop and a pavilion with exhibitions.
