The Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar is one of Barcelona’s most stunning churches and a prime example of Catalan Gothic architecture. Its design showcases a cleaner, more restrained style compared to the elaborate ornamentation typically associated with Gothic structures. Construction began in 1329 and was completed in 1383 — an impressive feat for such a monumental project. Inside, the basilica feels remarkably spacious and airy, with its three naves of equal height supported by towering, slender pillars. The sparse decoration of the chapels enhances this sense of openness. Natural light filters through the magnificent rose window on the main façade and the vibrant stained glass windows, bathing the interior in a serene glow.

Through guided tours or individually, visitors can stroll through this imposing campus and explore its 500-year history. On-site landmarks include the Hunterian Museum, Art Gallery and the Zoology Museum — or why not just soak up vibes at the students' favourite cafés and restaurants.

The Koopmans-de Wet House is pretty 18th century townhouse decorated and furnished as it would have been in the 18th and 19th centuries, including an impressive collection of ceramics and offering a glimpse into the gracious life of colonial Cape Town. The Koopmans-de Wet family, who originally owned the house, was known for helping orphans and widows in the community.

The Toulon Museum of Art features paintings from the School of Provence alongside an exhibition on the region’s wildlife and minerals.
