White sand and turquoise water are the key ingredients to Monastir's beaches. The most obvious choice would be to head straight to Karaia (Qaraiya) beach, which is one of the focal points of the city. However, it does get very busy in high season. For those willing to venture a little further afield for some R&R, the beaches of Sousse such as Bou Jaafar and Las Vegas Beach are particularly beautiful. The coast between Monastir and Sousse is a bit more utilitarian but could prove to be an interesting adventure as the locals will often come there to cast a fishing line on the beaches and for all horse lovers, there is riding and racing further inland at the Monastir Hippodrome and the Eki Club. Just beware that there is not a lot of shade on offer along the waterfront, so be sure to pack the SPFs.

Marina Village is a palm-lined waterfront esplanade where luxury yachts are moored. Dine al fresco in one of the fine restaurants with views to the southern Whitsunday Islands or enjoy water-based activities such as snorkelling, fishing, jet skiing and parasailing. Next door is Harbour Beach and the Pine Islet Lighthouse — the only working kerosene-lit lighthouse in the world.

At 2351 metres above sea level, the Pico is the highest point of Portuguese territory. At the top is a 700-meter crater, 30 meters deep. The entire landscape around the volcano is rich in geological formations, notably the vineyards at the base of the mountain, classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Take a tour with an official guide to make the most of this experience.

Also a part of Mount St. Helens’ exploratory efforts, the Science & Learning Center at Coldwater gives guests the opportunity to experience educational programs, picnic on the deck, receive information on the 1980 eruption and even purchase 'Discover Your Northwest' souvenirs. Hike along the Elk Bench Trail and Lakes Trail, gaining fabulous views of Coldwater Lake and elk sightings. Once past these trails, you’ll find yourself in the stunning Mt. Margaret Backcountry.
