Staten Island might be the city’s quietest borough, but it’s full of character and history. The free Staten Island Ferry runs all day and night, offering great views of the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan before docking in St. George, where 19th-century architecture meets local culture. Stop by the restored St. George Theatre, the National Lighthouse Museum, or the Staten Island Museum, which mixes natural history, art, and local exhibits. Green space is everywhere here. The Staten Island Greenbelt offers miles of trails and woodlands, and in summer, the island’s beaches are popular for kayaking and relaxing by the water. For a closer look at local history, visit the Alice Austen House, once home to one of America’s first female photographers, or explore Historic Richmond Town, a preserved village with buildings and artifacts that trace island life back to the 1600s. Staten Island also has a growing food scene, especially around St. George and Stapleton, where you’ll find local breweries and waterfront restaurants worth discovering.

The oldest stable of the island, Provo Ponies offers both group and private horseback riding tours through Long Bay Beach. You'll be able to wade through the waters with the provided steed; trotting and cantering will be available, if conditions allow it, on the two rides that are scheduled every day.

These fabulous mountains of West MacDonnell Ranges stretch for 644 kilometres east and west of Alice, with numerous water holes, beautiful gorges, historic sites and Aboriginal rock art as well as plenty of walking trails, wildlife and good bush camping. Some places are within a reach of 10-20 kilometres from town, so head here and enjoy its rich atmosphere. There are countless walking tracks ranging, mapped out for leisurely hikes to daring multi-day adventures. The 223-kilometre Larapinta Trail stretches through the park and offers extended and overnight bushwalks.

This museum contains three different departments — Road transport Hall of Fame, Kenworth Museum and Old Ghan Road — that are all committed to provide a nostalgic trip into Australia's transport history. While the original carriages of the historic Ghan railway are on display, you can also enjoy a traditional morning or afternoon tea inside a narrow gauge locomotive.
