The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is the premier arts institution in The Bahamas. This gallery is excellently curated and definitely worthy of a visit. Four decades of Bahamian Art are exhibited, from 1973, the year of Bahamian Independence, to the present.

Once a federal prison housing dangerous and notorious criminals, Alcatraz (The Rock) now welcomes tourists into the cell blocks once occupied by the likes of Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelley, and the Birdman of Alcatraz. Self-guided audio tours have dramatic narratives of Alcatraz’s grim history, including realistic sound effects one would hear in prison. Apart from the prison complex itself, Alcatraz Island essentially operates as a national park. You can spend a full day hiking, taking in the view from multiple observation points and appreciating the natural beauty.

Monestario De La Cartuja is an elaborate Baroque monastery and church, constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries. The Sanctuary and Sacristy are particularly impressive. Within the brick walls you can enjoy breathtaking gardens and experience how clerics and monks lived in times past.

The upmarket marina at Port Denarau has restaurants, cafés and a stage for hosting traditional Fijian performances. Restaurants offer everything from South Pacific and Indian cuisines, to pizza and ice-cream, while there is a spacious seated area with picturesque views across the water especially beautiful at sunset.
