The archaeological site of Pupput is often empty of visitors - those arriving early in the mornings may find themselves one-on-one with the scant remains of a former settlement and some rather well-preserved - for the time being, at least - Byzantine mosaics.

A stone's throw from Windhoek's Christuskirche is the city's liveliest city park, attracting picnickers and lunch breakers from the surrounding offices. Although no animals have called the park home for decades, it retains its original name from when it served as a public zoo. An elephant column serves as a reminder of the location's past, when it was used as elephant hunting grounds nearly 5 millennia ago.

In 1832, Russia began construction of the fortress of Bomarsund. Since Åland then constituted the westernmost part of Czarist Russia and had a location of strategic importance, Russia desired a strong military presence and an impressive fortress there. During the Crimean War, in 1854, an Anglo-French naval force attacked the fortress, which resulted in the Battle of Bomarsund. The fortress was demolished and today only ruins (and the Bomarsund Museum) serve testament to Russian presence and the grandiose plans once wielded for Åland. At 1,420 metres above sea level, Åreskutan is one of Sweden's most famous mountains, offering a magnificent view over the western Jämtland mountain world. Reaching the summit and Sweden's highest eatery, Toppstugan, is made easy thanks to the Kabinbanan — the only one of its kind in the Swedish mountains.
