The now privately-owned Bird Island is the archipelago's northernmost, tellingly named after its incredible population of birds. The Bird Island Lodge provides eco-friendly accommodation and delicious meals, and further pursuits include snorkelling, dolphin-watching, and meeting the island's largest inhabitant - the 300kg tortoise Esmeralda.

The Alcazaba Monument is a 10th-century fortress with three huge enclosures, gardens, and the Walls of Hayrán extending down the valley to the opposing San Cristobál hill. Warrens of cave houses are cut into the rock below. From here you will have great views of the city and port, not to mention the most legendary sunsets.

The little town of Boquete offers a good selection of restaurants catering to all tastes and budgets. Since Boquete is an agricultural town, chefs have access to the freshest organic vegetables and herbs. One praiseworthy local restaurant, The Rock, is located on the banks of the Palo Alto River, just outside of central Boquete. The large windows allow for fantastic views up the valley, and the fireplace seating area is a cosy spot at night. "Food without pretences" is their motto, and the menu focuses on locally available produce and meats. Steaks and ribs are cooked to perfection and may be accompanied by artisan beers made exclusively for the restaurant or the perfect wine. Thursday is All-You-Can-Eat Rib Night. If you are in Boquete, a meal at The Rock is a must.

Located at the top of the Inishowen Peninsula, Ireland’s most northerly point, Malin Head is a place of breath-taking beauty. The landscape is so scenic that it was chosen as a filming location for the movie "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". Circle this rugged coast, spotting migratory seabirds and dramatic landmarks like Hell’s hole cavern, Banba’s Crown tower and An Grianán Ailigh fort. On a cloudless evening, you might even be able to spot the Northern Lights.
