Xi'an’s largest Taoist temple, the Temple of the Eight Immortals, dates back to the Song Dynasty and remains an active place of worship. The temple was supposedly built on the site of an ancient wine shop and is said to have been constructed to protect against subterranean divine thunder. As you explore the temple, you'll notice vivid scenes from Taoist mythology painted around the courtyard. The temple also has an intriguing historical connection: in 1901, Empress Cixi, mother of China’s last emperor, sought refuge here after fleeing Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion.

Even today, the former Reichsparteitagsgelände (Nazi Party Rally Grounds) in the south of the city is still home to gigantic ruins representing the Nazi regime’s deluded notion of grandeur. The 11 km² complex was where the Nazi Party orchestrated its propaganda campaign. The documentation centre is located in the north wing of the Kongresshalle, which was designed by the Nazis to hold 50 000 people and was never completed. The permanent “Faszination und Gewalt” (“Fascination and Terror”) exhibition housed in the 1300 m² venue, chronicles the causes, relationships and consequences of the Nazi dictatorship.

The New Museum - State Museum for Art and Design - with its curved glass facade rises over the medieval city walls in the beginning of Nuremberg's Old Town. The handsome museum has received many awards for its striking modern architecture and is a venue for contemporary art and design.

Lord Howe Island is great for walking and hiking. Although only 11 km long and 2 km wide, the island has many bushwalking options for a wide range of abilities. The most challenging is the 14 km Mt Gower hike, rated as one of the best day treks in the world. An experienced guide will lead you through this 875-metre ascent, an eight-hour return journey that requires ropes in some sections.
