One of the Hoi An Ancient Town's most emblematic structures, the Japanese Covered Bridge dates back to the early 17th century, when it was first constructed by the Japanese community as a link to the Chinese quarters of Hoi An. Much of the original ornamental wood carvings remain preserved, and so do the sculptures of two dogs and two monkeys on either end of the bridge. Although the exact reasons for this particular animal selection aren't clearly identifiable, some explanations include the sacred status of the two in Japanese culture and birth years of Japanese emperors predominantly falling on either dog or monkey. Inside the bridge, there is a tiny temple of the northern god Tran Vo Bac De, who is believed to hold powers of controlling the weather. The Japanese Covered Bridge is included on the list of attractions one can visit on an Ancient Town Entry Ticket.

In the heart of Konak Square stands İzmir's most iconic landmark, the Clock Tower. Erected in 1901 to mark the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdul Hamid II's reign, the tower has a height of 25 metres and features four floors and an octagonal plan, characterised by a white marble platform and cut stone structures. No visit would be complete without a photograph next to the majestic monument.

"New Monastery" is a misnomer – this imposing religious institution was founded in the 11th century by the Byzantine Emperor Constanine IX Monomachos. It is, perhaps, the finest religious building in the Aegean islands, with mosaics that date back to the golden age of Byzantine religious art.

Perched atop Mount Pagos in the heart of İzmir, Kadifekale offers a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape and the Aegean Sea. Also known as ‘Velvet Castle’, Kadifekale boasts a rich past dating back to various periods, including Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine times. Visitors can explore the archaeological remains while enjoying breathtaking vistas of İzmir and the coastline below. At sunset, the call to prayer echoes throughout the city, reverberating in a show of İzmir's soul. Linked to the centre by a bus line, it is also ideal for a suggestive hike.
