Procession of the Holy Blood

This procession that dates back to at least 1304, takes place in Bruges every year on Ascension Day. Although there have been many changes over the centuries, the heart of the event is the reenactment of the passion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Procession of the Holy Blood was added to the representative list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity.

Triennial Bruges 2024

Every three years the Bruges Triennial brings contemporary art and architecture to the historic city centre of Bruges: a unique setting and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since 2015 it has built further on the series of triennials that were put together in 1968, 1971, and 1974 and brought visual arts into the public domain. In each edition, the artistic team invites national and international artists and architects to submit new temporary installations. Some dozen of these works of art and meeting places engage in an active dialogue with their surroundings: alongside waterways, in cobbled streets, in peaceful places of worship, or on vacant lots. For visitors, it will be a summer-long exploration, following a unique and inviting trail with a social aspect.

Carillon concerts

Throughout the year, you can enjoy free, live carillon concerts in Bruges on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to noon. From mid-June to mid-September, evening concerts also take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 pm to 10 pm. The inner courtyard of the Belfry is a good place to listen.

Airbag Festival — Accordion festival

This international biennial accordion festival is already into its ninth edition, this time with accordion virtuoso Philippe Thuriot as the curator. Performances will take place in the Royal City Theatre, the Magic Mirrors marquee and various other venues spread throughout the city.

GOLD — Polyphony festival

A polyphony festival that brings together all the beauty of Bruges in the Golden Age: the fascinating history, immovable heritage, art treasures and, above all, music. This second edition revolves around the Lucca Choirbook.

Budapest Festival

A music festival with concerts by the celebrated Budapest Festival Orchestra, conducted by Iván Fischer, who also wants to use this festival as a medium to introduce classical music to young children.

Zandfeesten

Flanders' largest antiques and second-hand market on 't Zand attracts bargain-hunters from far and wide.

Cactus Festival

An atmospheric open-air music festival in the Minnewater Park, with a cocktail of contemporary music in all its diversity. Internationally famous, yet easy-going. A true people’s festival that stimulates all senses, both onstage and off, with a large selection of culinary treats.

Winter Glow brings warmth and conviviality to the Burg square. This winter festival always guarantees scintillating street theatre, atmospheric concerts and heartwarming fire installations. Christmas market, ice-skating rink, festive lights and an outdoor bar — what else could one need to feel the spirit of winter holidays.

Tour of Flanders

This historic and world-famous race for professional cyclists will be contested for the 100th time in 2016. The start is on the Markt at 10 am. The City of Bruges will be laying on a celebratory programme to mark the occasion.

Film festival Mooov

This 10-day film festival, screened in Cinema Lumière and Cinema Liberty, shows the best new films from Africa, Asia and South America. The programme covers both artistically innovative movies and films with a social conscience.

Pageant of the Golden Tree

The Pageant of the Golden Tree takes place every five years and is inspired by the festivities to celebrate the marriage of Charles the Bold and Margaret of York in 1468. The Golden Tree was the symbol of the chivalric tournament that was held on the Market Square as part of these celebrations. The modern day procession involves more than 2,000 costumed participants, several ‘giants’ and various decorated floats.
