Ibiza - Do & See
Ibiza is more than just bars and beach life. Take a day to explore the island by bike or car, stroll among the narrow streets of Dalt Vila and pick up a real bargain at the Hippie market. This is a lovely holiday destination!
Cova De Can Marça
Enjoy the breathtaking views of the sea as you descend into the prehistoric and concealed cave system once used by tobacco and liquor smugglers. Stalagmites and stalactites decorate the cave and at the centre there’s a 9 meter high water cascade. Tours are every hour from 10.30 until sunset every day all year.
The caves are just to the right of the Port de Sant Miquel beach, Sant Miquel.
Dalt Vila
The Dalt Vila (old town) Walls is declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO and was built in the 16th century as a defense against attackers. The narrow and cobbled streets are well-preserved and magnificent views await on the top of the castle complex as well as by the Santa María Cathedral - the crown of the Dalt Vila. The outstanding gateway Portal de ses Taules can be found in the north wall. It is definitely worth a visit as it is a small town in itself.
Diving
Warm, clear waters and lots of coastline with rich marine life makes Ibiza an amazing place for divers and snorkelling. Dive sites include cave diving and ship wreck diving.
There are many professional diving schools scattered around on Ibiza’s beaches, but they can be quite pricey though.
Es Canar Hippie Market
The enormous market offers a great choice of clothing and jewelry at low prices. If you look closely, you can still spot some of the original hippies who started the market in the 1960s. It’s open every Wednesday 10 am-7 pm from May until October.
Exploring The Island
If you feel like exploring the island through the pine-wooded hills to distant and secluded coves, you can rent cars, mopeds and bicycles at reasonable prices almost every where on the island. Tip: don’t rent them from the hotel as they tend to charge extra.
Formentera Island
This amazing island neighbouring Ibiza, has unspoiled beaches with crystal clear blue water. From the small port of La Savina, there are buses to other parts of the island, or you can hire a car, moped or bicycle from one of the nearby shops. You can grab a map from the port’s tourist office. Sights of interest include a 4,000-year-old Ca Na Costa sepulture - the islands natural beauty, the Es Mirador restaurant and the beaches of Cala Saona, Illettes and Llevant.
Museu D’art Contemporani
International artists connected with Ibiza are in display in this small gallery. The museum organises several exhibitions throughout the year.
Necropolis De Puig D’es Molins
The Museu de Arqueologia is attached to this ancient Carthage burial site thought to contain over 4,000 graves. The archeological museum gives a good picture of life on Ibiza a couple of thousand years ago.
Sa Penya
Between the Dalt Vila and the Port of Ibiza lies the area of Sa Penya. A former fishermans’ quarter, the small cozy streets now sizzles with life in the summer as the busiest bars, restaurants and shops are here. Don’t miss the nightly club parades when drag queens and musicians hand out fliers for the evening’s parties.
Ses Salines
The salt fields have been in use for over 2,000 years and created the ‘white gold’ of Ibiza. It was the island’s main industry until tourism came to Ibiza. As the water evaporates over the hot summer, salt crust is left on the bottom of the lakes making a spectacular sight every night as it glistens when the sun sets. Bring your camera!
