Known around the world for its wine, Chianti is more than just a label—it’s a patchwork of rolling vineyards, olive groves, and old stone villages spread between Florence and Siena, with no clear delimitation. You’ll come across small family-run wineries, quiet roads, and landscapes that haven’t changed much in centuries. Even if you’re not deep into wine, it’s an easy and rewarding area to explore.

Once used for shipping in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the piers are now used for their views. The Avila Beach Pier is the first of the three piers and was first constructed in 1908 by the county of San Luis Obispo. Over two thousand local residents gathered there on April 30th, 1908 when President Teddy Roosevelt's 'Great White Fleet' anchored offshore. The Harford Pier was developed in 1873 and is now used for fishing, restaurants and commercial fishing. The last pier, the California Polytechnic State University Pier, is an educational and marine research facility.

Val d’Orcia conjures up everything you picture when you think of Tuscany—rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, and quiet hill towns. It’s a protected UNESCO site, partly because of the landscape, partly because of how little it’s changed over the centuries. Pienza is the standout—it was designed as the 'ideal city' during the Renaissance and still feels unusually well put together. The Abbey of Sant’Antimo is a peaceful stop, tucked into the countryside. And if you're into wine, this is Brunello country—some of the best reds in Italy. Even just driving through is half the experience.

Cape Verde's second city is also the undisputed centre of culture, entertainment and nightlife, including Brazilian-influenced Carnival celebrations. Mindelo's Porto Grande harbour is a visual feast with its colourful colonial houses gracing the shoreline against the dramatic backdrop of rugged mountains. Alongside the harbour, you’ll also find the Torre de Belém, a scaled-down replica of the historic tower in Lisbon.
