Works on Brindisi’s impressive Cathedral began in the 11th century and it was rebuilt in the mid-18th century. Parts of the original building, including a twelfth-century mosaic floor, can still be seen. Inside you can see the altars in poly-chrome marble commissioned, the balustrades and the majolica floor.

Its neighborhoods each have their own flavor: in Astoria, Greek tavernas and bakeries line the streets, while Flushing offers some of the city’s best Asian restaurants. MoMA PS1 in Long Island City showcases cutting-edge contemporary art in an industrial setting, and nearby, the Noguchi Museum blends indoor and outdoor space with sculptures by Japanese-American artist Isamu Noguchi. History fans can visit the King Manor Museum in Jamaica, once home to Rufus King, a signer of the U.S. Constitution and early abolitionist. Citi Field, home of the Mets, and the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, where the U.S. Open takes place, are also here. Both JFK and LaGuardia airports are in Queens, making it the first and last stop for many visitors.

Casa di Giulietta is a 14th-century Gothic house linked (mostly by myth) to Juliet from Shakespeare’s play. The name similarity between the real Dal Cappello family and the fictional Capulets kicked off the connection. Inside, there’s a small museum and a stone balcony—added long after Shakespeare's time—which draws a steady stream of visitors. The courtyard gets packed, but there’s something fun about the whole scene—even if you know it’s more story than history.
