San Giuliano Martire is a Renaissance-style Roman Catholic church that also serves as a museum. Construction of this remarkable structure took place from 1553 to 1575, and it stands adjacent to an abbey that once belonged to the Benedictine order. Within the museum section of the church, you can explore an impressive collection of artworks, including renowned paintings by Paolo Veronese that depict the martyrdom of St. Julian and Bittino da Faenza, illustrating the life of the saint.

Geologically, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve is unlike any other in the Valley: forests of cacti, unique fauna, and rolling landscapes of mountains and hills all cohabit here. The preserve covers 27,800 acres of Scottsdale grounds. To avoid the heat, visit early in the morning or later in the day.

One room contains Schliemann’s finds from Mycenae, another has the famous frescoes from Santorini on display. There is also a fine collection of idols from the Cyclades and ceramics from all parts of the Mediterranean. The star of the museum is the Antikythera Mechanism, an ancient hand-powered orrery, described as the oldest example of an analogue computer used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses decades in advance. This scientific marvel is dated somewhere between 205 and 60 BCE.
