The oldest surviving building of the Namibian capital was originally built to house the German colonial troops in the late 19th century, later going on to become a museum for Namibia's struggle for independence, as well as a historic landmark in itself. The controversial Reiterdenkmal, an alleged symbol of German dominance in the region, has been relocated from its original place opposite the Christuskirche into the yard of Alte Feste for storage. The interior space is closed for public visits as of mid-2019; a few wartime exhibits are showcased out front.

The Castle Keep in Newcastle is one of the finest of its kind surviving in Britain today. It is an ancient monument and a Grade 1 listed building. It sits upon ground previously occupied by the Roman fort Pons Aelius, an Anglo-Saxon cemetery and a Norman Motte and Bailey Castle from which the City takes its name.

No supermarket can replace the charm of personal contact with a vendor or the excitement of an unpredictable purchase at the main Rijeka market, known as Placa. It developed in the 19th century, next to the sea shore — right by the near the wooden pier where the local fishermen used to unload their catch and carry it in baskets to be sold at the market.
