To get a good impression of how Dresden once used to look, head to Königstraße in the Neustadt Quarter and its rows of beautifully restored 18th-century houses. An abundance of restaurants and elegant boutiques are hidden in the inner courtyards.

In 1832, Russia began construction of the fortress of Bomarsund. Since Åland then constituted the westernmost part of Czarist Russia and had a location of strategic importance, Russia desired a strong military presence and an impressive fortress there. During the Crimean War, in 1854, an Anglo-French naval force attacked the fortress, which resulted in the Battle of Bomarsund. The fortress was demolished and today only ruins (and the Bomarsund Museum) serve testament to Russian presence and the grandiose plans once wielded for Åland. Hannover Arts Association annually stages numerous national and international exhibitions reflecting important developments and schools of contemporary art. Founded in 1832 already, with the aim of spreading the sense for Fine Arts, it today has more than 1,200 members and an even bigger client base of regulars that come here for experiencing great art and interesting discussions.

Scale this 278m-tall volcano and enjoy unique and fascinating views. The viewing platform on the crater rim offers panoramic views of the volcanic landscape and is well worth the climb.
