Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, Via Garibaldi is lined with resplendent Renaissance palaces, constructed by Genoa's wealthiest families during the 16th and 17th centuries. Palazzo Bianco is home to an extensive collection of Italian and Flemish art, featuring works by illustrious artists such as Rubens, Van Dyck, and Caravaggio. Meanwhile, Palazzo Rosso showcases an incredible collection of art that has been amassed over the course of two centuries by the Brignole-Sale family.

Constructed by the Balbi family in the 17th century, the Palazzo Reale (also known as Palazzo Stefano Balbi) was originally a sprawling aristocratic residence for three of the most powerful families in the city: the Balbis, Durazzos, and Savoys. Today, it serves as a museum and boasts an extensive collection of historical furniture, paintings, and sculptures. Visitors can also explore the impressive garden, which is teeming with lush vegetation and exotic flora.

One of Kochi's most iconic sights is the Chinese Fishing Nets, or Cheena vala, which have been associated with the region for centuries. These massive, cantilevered fishing contraptions, introduced by Chinese explorers during Kublai Khan's reign, are still used by local fishermen today. The nets operate with a mesmerising ballet of precision and balance, elegantly lowered and raised with the tide, often requiring several men to pull the catch. At sunset, the silhouette of these age-old devices against the horizon creates a mystical atmosphere, turning the act of fishing into a spectacle of heritage and ingenuity.

Among the many mosques in Djerba’s villages, two should not be missed. The first one is the Turkish mosque in El May. Located in the heart of the island, with whitewashed walls, this fortified mosque is simply beautiful. El May’s market is also worth a visit. In Mellita, another village near the airport, their 9th-century mosque is one of the oldest in the world.
