As Kyōto's most iconic landmark, Kinkaku-Ji (literally the "Temple of the Golden Pavillion"), is undoubtedly astonishing. Built in 1397, the complex was the retirement villa of the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Soon after his death in 1408, the structure was converted into a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect by his son. Engulfed in flames several times throughout the ages, the current complex was rebuilt true to the original in 1955 (except for the top two floors that were both covered in gold leaf). Thousands of sightseers pack the site to glance at the breathtaking Gold Temple, its reflection shimmering in the serene pond in a picturesque setting. It's best to go early in the morning or just before closing to avoid queuing in notoriously slow-moving lines.

Monkey Beach, also known as Teluk Duyung, is popular for its calm water, fine sand, picnic tables, and a troop of half-tame macaques. It is an attractive destination for a 2-3 hour walk through the tropical woodland of Penang National Park, Taman Negara Pulau Pinang. Be sure to check in at the park office before setting off.

Phœnix Parc Floral de Nice is the world’s largest greenhouse. Seven different tropical climates (damp, in other words) covering seven hectares, packed with 2,500 different plants. You can walk in the shadow of an (almost) unknown palm tree here, look at a baby shark, smell a thousand flowers and listen to bird song- on the loudspeakers.

This museum of oddities is a temple of all things weird, bizarre, and — at times — gross and creepy. From an alien autopsy table and (somewhat disturbing) crime scene recreations to treats served at the on-site café (dessert with crickets and scorpion bits, anyone?), the Peculiarium is a bloody good time if you're not too squeamish (or underage).
