The 55-metre high castle church, made out of sandstone, is the town’s landmark. It was built between 1695 and 1701, and it is considered as one of the best-known baroque-style buildings in the region. The so-called Temple of Hercules (AD 162–166) dominates Amman’s Citadel. These days, archaeologists prefer to call it the Great Temple of Amman, since its dedication remains uncertain. Excavations nearby expose layers of civilisation: Umayyad palaces, Byzantine churches, and Roman baths intertwine with older Bronze Age ruins. Though the Hercules name persists thanks to the sculptural remnant, archaeologists emphasise the temple’s civic importance. Its sheer scale reflects Amman’s status as a regional hub. Beginning at the Nervi marina, Anita Garibaldi's Walk is a picturesque 2-km route that leads to the ancient port of Capolungo in Noli.
