The Basilica of Saint Sernin, Europe's largest Romanesque church, is home to the tomb of Saint Sernin, a bishop and martyr who played a crucial role in the spread of Christianity in Toulouse. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this magnificent basilica is a must-visit destination that boasts impressive ceilings and marble decorations that serve as a testament to its illustrious history, including its significant role as a pilgrimage site.

The area of 56 997 hectares of the Balaton Uplands National Park mainly consists of these six landscape protection areas: Kis-Balaton, Keszthely Hills, Tapolca Basin, Káli Basin, Pécsely Basin and Tihany Peninsula. Among its regions Kis-Balaton is also protected by the international Ramsar Convention, serving the protection of wetland habitats. Tihany Peninsula – as a recognition of its outstanding geological values and the work of nature conservation in that region – was awarded of European Diploma in 2003. The Natura 2000 areas, covering partly the National Park and going beyond its area ensure the possibility of the conservation of habitats, plant and animal species which are of European importance. The initiative of Bakony–Balaton Geopark – the area of which covers partly the National Park – sets the aim of interpreting the geological, natural and cultural values and awakening the consciousness of their social significance. The Bakony–Balaton Geopark became member of the European Geoparks Network and the Global Geoparks Network – assisted by UNESCO in 2012.

The Greek island of Rhodes is a very popular destination for excursions, with its plethora of churches, monasteries, mosques and mediaeval buildings. Both UNESCO and the European Union are protecting this unique cultural heritage, with the Old Town being one of Europe’s most authentic medieval sites. There are daily boat trips to Rhodes and the journey takes 1 hour.

Pamukkale really is one of nature’s wonders. There are terraces with pools, and the water runs down from one level to the next in a natural spectacle created by white lime deposits. The name means ”The Cotton-wool Fortress.” Unfortunately, too many visitors have created a lot of wear and tear on the cliffs, and now most of the pools are closed to the public. There are daily excursions here, but you can also take the local bus. The travelling time is about 3.5 hours.
