Designed by internationally famed architect I.M. Pei, the building houses approximately 11,000 pieces of American art, including paintings, ceramics, sculpture, photos and videos. With a focus on local and regional art, the museum's permanent collection includes its widely-recognized ceramics collection built upon its acquisition of several pieces by Syracuse art potter Adelaide Alsop Robineau in 1916. It is also the home to one of the nation's earliest and largest collections of art videos from the 1960s and 1970s.

Fyrishov is one of Sweden’s largest arenas with approximately 2 million visitors every year. The indoor water park attracts many visitors all year round, but there are also sports facilities and swimming pools, along with a spa, gym, restaurant and outdoor swimming pool. In 1832, Russia began construction of the fortress of Bomarsund. Since Åland then constituted the westernmost part of Czarist Russia and had a location of strategic importance, Russia desired a strong military presence and an impressive fortress there. During the Crimean War, in 1854, an Anglo-French naval force attacked the fortress, which resulted in the Battle of Bomarsund. The fortress was demolished and today only ruins (and the Bomarsund Museum) serve testament to Russian presence and the grandiose plans once wielded for Åland.
