Pamukkale, located in western Turkey, is famous for its mineral-rich thermal waters and striking white terraces. Its name translates to 'cotton castle,' a reference to the bright travertine formations created by mineral deposits from the hot springs. As the water flows from the summit, around 320 metres high, it forms a series of natural pools that look almost otherworldly. If you’re staying in Izmir, Pamukkale makes an excellent day trip. The journey takes roughly 2.5 hours by bus or private car, and many travellers opt to join an organised tour for convenience. Setting off early in the morning is advisable so you can enjoy the site fully and avoid the midday crowds.

Höhenpark Killesberg is Stuttgart’s go-to green space when you want a break from the city buzz. It’s got a bit of everything: a 40-metre spiral tower with city views, a miniature train that loops through the park, and a petting zoo with goats, donkeys, and llamas. During the summer months, the outdoor pool and wave machine are a hit, and there’s plenty of space to picnic or wander through flower gardens.

Located only a short walk outside the old town, the Lille Zoo is a pleasant afternoon pastime for the whole family. Ticket prices are times lower than those at an average west European zoo, all animals are well looked after, and an impressive collection of species for a zoo of such compact size is represented.
