Constructed in the late 1540s under the rule of Gustav Vasa, Uppsala Castle stands as a testament to centuries of Swedish history. This is the former capital of the Khmer Empire, which ruled this region between the 9th and 12th centuries. Each temple is unique, from the grandeur of Angkor Wat to the beauty of Banteay Srei, this dynastic ’village’ is spellbinding. You need a minimum of two days to explore. As the temples are spread out, transportation is required. Bicycles, motorbikes, tuk-tuks and air-conditioned cars are at your disposal. Guides can be sought through most hotels and guesthouses.

According to the written tradition, a Francis-can monk named Joakim Balagović brought Our Lady’s statue from the Holy Land in 1669 as a gift for his brother Nikola who lived just by the road at Trški vrh. When the unfortunate Nikola’s house caught fire and burned to the ground, the statue was found untouched in the ashes. Nikola then put it in the hollow walnut tree near his house and that’s where the first worshiping of the statue began.
