Filippo Strozzi the Elder commissioned it to show up the Medici and make a statement about his family’s status. These days, the Renaissance palace hosts rotating international art exhibitions and cultural events, and it’s one of the city’s top spots for contemporary shows in a historic setting.

Step into the shoes of the leading Baroque artist of his era. Rubens and his family lived in this palatial setting for well over 25 years and it is here that the artist created the lion’s share of his work. Here he entertained Europe’s nobility and Royalty and stored his impressive art collection in a beautiful art room. The charming garden, the creators’ workshop and the fabulous collection draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world.

Built in 1251, this is the birthplace of the Dominican order and the resting place of its founder — Saint Dominic. It is one of the richest churches in Bologna when it comes to history and art. The small museum houses art and precious artefacts like the relic of Louis IX of France. Be sure to also admire the beautiful Romanesque façade and Gothic chapels.

Val d’Orcia conjures up everything you picture when you think of Tuscany—rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, and quiet hill towns.
