The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial site of Germany’s division. Located directly at the former border strip in the Bernauer Straße is a 1.4-kilometre piece of the Berlin Wall with a border strip and watchtower. The Gedenkstätte memorial is the last remaining stretch of the Wall as it existed during the separation era, and it conveys an impression of how the border fortifications really looked. The Visitor Center and the Documentation Center with a viewing platform are located on the other side of the street that belonged to the western part of the city. The exhibition 'Border Stations and Ghost Stations in Divided Berlin' is shown inside the Nordbahnhof S-Bahn station.

Once a federal prison housing dangerous and notorious criminals, Alcatraz (The Rock) now welcomes tourists into the cell blocks once occupied by the likes of Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelley, and the Birdman of Alcatraz. Self-guided audio tours have dramatic narratives of Alcatraz’s grim history, including realistic sound effects one would hear in prison. Apart from the prison complex itself, Alcatraz Island essentially operates as a national park. The creations of the famous architect Jože Plečnik (1872–1957) put a mark on three cities of Central Europe: Vienna, Prague, but most of all his beloved hometown of Ljubljana. It was Plečnik’s objective to breathe new life into Ljubljana by redesigning it into a comprehensive masterpiece. The most prominent landmarks include the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), the Cobbler’s Bridge (Čevljarski most), the building of the National and the University library, the Križanke summer theatre, the Žale cemetery and others.
