The Luleå cathedral was built after the great fire in Luleå in 1887. The fire completely destroyed the old church on the site, Gustaf's church, which was from the late 1700s. Designed by architect Adolf Emil Melander in a neo-Gothic style, the new cathedral was initially named Oscar Fredrik's church upon its 1893 opening, in honour of King Oscar II. Spanning 54 metres in length and 35 metres in width, the cross-shaped cathedral features a towering spire exceeding 60 metres in height. Architect Knut Nordenskjöld led a redesign that veered towards modernity, stripping away wall paintings and star decorations, leaving a pristine white interior. Despite these changes, echoes of the original style linger in the church entrances, creating a harmonious blend of historical and contemporary aesthetics.

Taking place in February, the Sapporo Snow Festival is an impressive event. Huge snow sculptures, one more fascinating than the next, dot Odori Park; some require a staggering 500 trucks filled with snow to be built.

Plaza Mayor, the main square of Madrid, boasts a fascinating history that dates back to the late 16th century when it was named Plaza del Arrabal, hosting the city’s most popular market. Today, it houses the Plaza Mayor Tourist Information Centre and the Tienda Casa de la Panadería, a shop selling souvenirs of Madrid made by local artisans. Another popular spot is El Arco de Cuchilleros, the most famous of the nine entrances to Plaza Mayor. Plaza Mayor is also an excellent place to enjoy a coffee or grab a bite, people-watch, and soak up the city’s rich history. Throughout the year, there are various events, including the drum parade at Easter, outdoor concerts, and the Christmas market in December, so be sure to check the calendar when you're visiting.
