The Luleå cathedral was built after the great fire in Luleå in 1887. The fire completely destroyed the old church on the site, Gustaf's church, which was from the late 1700s. Designed by architect Adolf Emil Melander in a neo-Gothic style, the new cathedral was initially named Oscar Fredrik's church upon its 1893 opening, in honour of King Oscar II. Spanning 54 metres in length and 35 metres in width, the cross-shaped cathedral features a towering spire exceeding 60 metres in height. Architect Knut Nordenskjöld led a redesign that veered towards modernity, stripping away wall paintings and star decorations, leaving a pristine white interior. Despite these changes, echoes of the original style linger in the church entrances, creating a harmonious blend of historical and contemporary aesthetics.

One of the finest on Naxos, Plaka is a long, attractive sandy beach which really comes alive in summer. Numerous taverns and cafes line the waterfront (most operate May to October), and holidaymakers swim in the turquoise waters and play beach games and water sports from dusk till dawn.

Set along the southern Tuscan coast, this was the region’s first natural park, created in 1975. It’s still well off most tourist itineraries, which is part of what makes it worth the trip. You’ll find wild beaches, open fields, pine forests, and a good mix of hiking and biking trails. It’s a solid choice if you’re after fresh air, sea views, and a quieter, less polished side of Tuscany.

Fort National, built in the late 17th century to protect St Malo, is a landmark of the city. If you decide to visit the museum do not forget to take the long spiral staircase to the top of the building, from an astonishing view of the city and the coastline unfolds.
