At Museum Østjylland, you can experience a culture-historical time travel reaching back as far as antiquity, and all the way up until this present day. In the permanent exhibitions, you will learn about life in the region 100,000 years ago until nowadays, while the interactive rune-stone and modern exhibitions about the Middle Ages invite to dressing up as nuns, noblemen and knights. The Cheonggyecheon was originally a creek that flowed through downtown Seoul -- in the wake of rapid post-war economic development, it was buried under concrete to facilitate urban expansion. Today, however, the over 10 km-long creek and its banks have been uncovered and remodelled into an exciting recreational area for locals and tourists, with clean water and natural habitats bordering on residential and office buildings.

In 1832, Russia began construction of the fortress of Bomarsund. Since Åland then constituted the westernmost part of Czarist Russia and had a location of strategic importance, Russia desired a strong military presence and an impressive fortress there. During the Crimean War, in 1854, an Anglo-French naval force attacked the fortress, which resulted in the Battle of Bomarsund. The fortress was demolished and today only ruins (and the Bomarsund Museum) serve testament to Russian presence and the grandiose plans once wielded for Åland.
