Many of the archipelago's islands are populated by giant Aldabra tortoises, and bird species number 250, 12 of those being unique to the islands. Mahe Island's Port Launay Marine National Park is the place to head for whale shark sightings, and Praslin Island is home to the country's national bird - the Seychelles black parrot. Cousine Island is where visitors are encouraged to take part in wildlife conservation projects (and spot free-roaming giant tortoises and rare bird species along the way). A mere 3km away from there is Fregate Island, known especially for its chelonian inhabitants.

Most probably built in 1420, as a colony of Benedictine refugees from the Friulian monastery of Saint Peter in Rožac (San Pietro di Rosazzo), the entire settlement will later be named after this abbey. Today very little has been preserved of its original appearance.

Franschhoek is a rather small but nonetheless impressive province to the east of Cape Town and, as part of the community of Stellenbosch, also portrayed with idyllic wine farms and lovely landscapes within a great natural reserve. As to its meaning of 'French Corner', this is where the Huguenots came to in the 17th centuries, and both culture and architecture show off a rich history of cultural and (wine)industrial happenings.
