The former home of American author and illustrator Edward Gorey, purchased in 1979, has been converted into a museum to honor his life and works. Built in 1820, this historic home showcases Gorey's distinctive style, known for its dark, whimsical, and sometimes macabre illustrations. His extensive collection of illustrated books has captivated readers of all ages, particularly children. Visitors to the museum can explore his creative legacy through exhibits and guided tours, which are available from April through December.

A trip to Iraq is often driven by a passion for history, and Ancient Babylon, located roughly 100 kilometres south of Baghdad, is a key attraction. Since accommodation near the site is limited, most visitors opt for a day trip from the capital. To reach Babylon, head to the Alawi car park, locally referred to as the 'garage', and ask about shared taxis or minivans heading there. The journey costs no more than 15,000 Iraqi dinars and takes about two hours. These vehicles typically drop passengers a few kilometres from the entrance, so you may need to arrange a local taxi or ask nearby residents for assistance. Currently, entrance to the archaeological site costs 25,000 Iraqi dinars, approximately $18 USD. Payment by card is possible, but it's advisable to carry cash, as foreign cards may not always be accepted. Inside, the ruins reveal a fascinating glimpse into the past. The main area consists of castle-like arches leading to wide terraces, alongside the remnants of the ancient gardens and in the distance, Saddam Hussein’s hilltop mansion looms. Access to the mansion is not guaranteed, as its opening appears to depend on the day and circumstance.

In case there wasn't enough to do in Monastir, the next port up has plenty to offer in the way of rare archaeological finds and exciting history which can be discovered in the Sousse Archaeological Museum or the Museum Dar Essid. The city of Sousse, similar to Monastir, exhibits some important ancient structures that remain intact today. The Ribat in Sousse is a bit smaller than that of Monastir and perhaps not as impressive, but it is inexpensive to enter and visitors can climb the tower right to the top to appreciate the expansive views of the city from above. The Medina is nearby and contains the main Mosque of the city as well as a bustling souk complete with passionate traders who will test your haggling skills. Be careful of rogue traders and pickpockets in busy areas such as these and be mindful of offers made by unlicensed operators. Getting to Sousse from Monastir is very easy to do, just hop on the bus or train from the city centre and in about half an hour you'll be there.
