Developed in the Sengoku period as a village for the visitors of the nearby shrine (Yasaka Shrine), the historic district is famous for being the home of geisha (the Japanese entertainment). Narrow streets dotted with teahouses, local eateries, traditional wooden houses, and bars and nightclubs are crammed with tourists from all over the world, wishing to see a geisha in their colourful kimono. The best way to explore the picturesque district is from Hanami-kōji street towards Shijō-dōri.

Built in 1963 to commemorate Tunisia's first president Habib Bourguiba, this colourful mosque demonstrates typical Tunisian religious architecture complete with pink marble pillars and golden mosaics which are exquisitely preserved. The impressive prayer room which is the focal point of the mosque can take up to one thousand visitors and is often busy with locals and tourists meandering through. It is worth noting that, although admittance to the mosque is free of charge, opening times may vary. Groningen University Museum, established in 1934, showcases an eclectic mix of nature, culture and science. Highlights include historical medical instruments, the world's first electric vehicle from 1835, and a tribute to Dr Aletta Jacobs, the Netherlands' first female graduate. The museum's anatomical theatre has around 50 macabre anatomical preparations, as well as some skeletons and wax models.
