The Gothenburg Cathedral, also known as the Gustavi Domkyrka, is a significant religious landmark in the heart of Gothenburg, with its origins tracing back to the 19th century. Appropriately for the 'Granite City' of Aberdeen, Marischal College, which today houses the city's municipal offices, is the second largest granite building in the world, crowned by the 72-metre-tall Mitchell Tower. At night the side of the building is beautifully decorated with different light patterns.

The park was established on the site of the former Al-Manshiyya neighbourhood, a historic Palestinian area that was demolished in the 1960s to make way for the development of the new central business district (CBD).
