Founded in the 3rd century BC at the crossroads between Eastern and Western Europe and at the confluence of the important waterways Danube and Sava, Belgrade used to be known as "the Door to Central Europe" or simply as "the Gate."

Today’s Belgrade is representative of its rich history, colorful past, exotic cultural heritage and a status of a grand capital city, having been the capital of Serbia since 1404, and the capital of the former republic of Yugoslavia between 1918 and 2003.

While Belgrade’s rich history makes itself reminded throughout the city, most notably in the old Belgrade Fortress at Kalmegdan, Belgrade is among the recent countries to join the EU. Belgrade these days features an abundance of cultural attractions and a wide range of events that draw visitors from across Europe, as well as a vibrant nightlife that has made it an increasingly popular weekend break.
