Phnom Penh - Essential Information

Airport

Phnom Penh International Airport (PNH) is approximately 10km from Phnom Penh. Visas can be purchased on arrival (US$25, 2 passport photos). The easiest way to get to and from the airport is by taxi (US$7) taking around 20 min. Add an extra 20 minutes during rush hour.
There are no metered taxis.

Public transport

Officially Phnom Penh has a public bus service but it is still unknown what route it ‘serves’ and where the stops are. Local transportation is either with motor-taxi drivers or tuk-tuk drivers. Make sure to agree on a price before getting on. Most rides within the city should not cost more than US$1. At night the price can increase. Cyclos, usually driven by old men from the countryside, are slower but provide a relaxing way to view the city and are slightly cheaper than moto-taxi drivers.

Motorbikes

Lucky Lucky Motorbikes has been renting bikes for years and has the largest variety of motorbikes. Phnom Penh’s traffic can be dangerous and road regulations are not followed by most drivers. A nice way to explore the city, but cautious driving is required to avoid accidents. Beware of traffic police on major crossroads. If they stop you, a money transaction might be necessary (US$3).

Tourist Traps

When visiting Wat Phnom, be aware that due to the site’s popularity there will be a number of beggars, street urchins and other vendors trying to gain your attention. Some may try to sell birds in cages and you pay to set the bird free as locals claim the birds are trained to return to their cage afterwards.
