Muslim Indian sepoys (soldiers) of the British East India Company’s Penang garrison built Masjid Kapitan Keling in 1801. It has been extensively restored and expanded in the two centuries since. Above the yellow domes and turrets of the mosque compound towers a tall minaret.

The Old Melbourne Gaol was established in 1841 and remains a fabulous insight into Melbourne’s historical past. The notorious bushranger Ned Kelly, along with dozens of others, were once executed within its walls. The night tours are spookily good. Also a great place for fans of escape rooms.

A nearly uninterrupted 14-kilometre stretch of sand extends from Geraki to Laganas, forming one of the last major nesting sites for the endangered loggerhead turtle. To protect the species, much of Laganas Bay is designated as a National Marine Park, where powered water sports are prohibited. Despite these conservation efforts, the resort of Laganas itself remains the island's largest and most bustling centre for nightlife, known for its concentration of pubs, bars, and clubs. For a quieter experience, a narrow wooden footbridge connects the coast near Agios Sostis Beach to the small and picturesque Cameo Island.

Inspired by the award-winning Sinai Trail and founded by the local Kushmaan Bedouin tribe, the Red Sea Mountain Trail spans 170 km, taking you into less explored territory and wild landscapes that were once part of trade, shepherd and smuggling routes. A Bedouin guide will accompany you through the entire 10-day-long hike, but there are easier alternative routes that can be taken anytime.
