The guide was updated:Newcastle's public transport network is extensive and consists of buses and ferries. There are numerous ticket types to choose from. There are timed tickets, Travel passes, Excursion tickets, Concession travel tickets and ferry tickets. Most tickets can be used on both buses and ferries.
Tickets can be bought from the bus driver, CityRail, at the stations, and from ticket agents. Note that not all ticket types are available at all outlets.

Newcastle Airport is located only 25 minutes from the city centre.
The airport is serviced by two different bus companies.
Port Stephens Coaches run between the airport and the Newcastle train station and the Nelson Bay area.
Hunter Valley Buses run between the airport and Maitland, Raymond and Stockton. Hunter Valley Buses accept cash for single trips and Opal cards (not sold at the airport). Port Stephens coaches accept credit card or Opal cards.

Taxis are available 24 hours a day at the taxi rank right outside the terminal.

Unless you are a New Zealand citizen granted visa exemption on arrival (in most cases), you will need to obtain a visa prior to visiting Australia. For citizens of the United States, Canada, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, South Korea and Malaysia, the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) entry permit is available, which can be applied for online and grants holders the right to enter Australia an ulimited amount of times for stays of no longer than 3 months per visit.
Citizens of all other world countries (with the exception of Somalia) are also able to apply for a visitor visa online. Best Time To Visit
Newcastle's coastal location generally means a rather humid climate. Air and ocean temperatures are the warmest during late March, early April and September. If you are looking to avoid holiday crowds, visit in March as there will be no school holidays visitors.
