The archipelago

Visit Karlshamn's beautiful archipelago. The archipelago extends from the western municipal border to Sweden’s southeastern corner. This group of islands is called Hällaryd’s archipelago and consists of 270 scenic islands of different sizes with stone or rocky beaches and meadows. Joggesö, Ekö, Hallö, Östra Bokö and Fölsö are the names of some of the islands. The largest in the archipelago is Tärnö. The archipelago boats visit most islands, starting at the archipelago terminal in the city center across from First Hotel. Boats also depart from Matvik and Järnavik.

Eriksberg Hotel & Nature Reserve

Go on a safari tour at Eriksberg's wildlife park and see wild animals in their proper environment. Red deer, fallow deer, Père David’s deer, European bison, wild boar and moufflon freely roam around in this unique nature reserve in the archipelago. The tour goes through a fascinating rocky landscape of oak woodlands, dense hornbeam woodlands and knotty conifers. There is a rich bird life as well, and one of the world’s largest stocks of the protected red water lily. The park consists of more than 925 hectares, of which 409 hectares of water. The fenced portion is about 900 hectares, which means that Eriksberg is one of northern Europe's largest wildlife reserves.

Karlshamn's Museum

The museum is located in the cultural quarter in Karlshamn. Here you will find the city museum, the old punsch factory, tobacco factory, the silversmith's workshop, the printing factory, art gallery and also the famous song writer for children Alice Tegner's special room. Skottbergska Gården is also in the cultural quarter. It is one of Sweden´s best preserved trading houses with roots from the late 18th century, orginal adornments and an apartment furnished in the style of that period.

The Emigrants Monument

Axel Olsson's monument "Karl Oskar & Kristina". The statue commemorating the migration to America via Karlshamn in the 19th century. The author Vilhelm Moberg wrote about the Swedish emigration to America in his novels and a large number of people left Sweden via Karlshamn. Axel Olssons famous statue depicts the key characters, Karl Oskar and Kristina, looking out over the sea before starting their adventure. You can also find a similar statue in Minnesota, in the town Lindstrom.

Fortress island Kastellet

Fortress island located in the entrance of Karlshamn's harbour. The entire island is in fact a fortress dating back to the 17th century when feuds with the Danish were common. Today Kastellet is a beautiful, exciting and easy-to-reach destination for visitors of all ages. For many years Kastellet has provided the scenery and venue for a popular local theatre perfomance during summer time. In the summer season you can visit the island by boat from the inner harbour in Karlshamn.

Sternö-Boön nature reserve

A unique and beloved preservation of nature. This nature reserve is filled with deciduous forest, seaweed belts, pines and a bloomy open ground that borders with a waterfilled quarry. Here you will find the rough Karlshamns granite and coast-gnejsen with its tunnels of pegmatite and fine-grained granite. Around Sternö-Boön along the sea you can also find a lot of old bunkers and fortifications that remain from the second world war, and if you are extra interested in history you may find old shipwrecks as well.

Långasjönäs nature reserve

In this nature reserve, you will find an area called Nytorpet. Nytorpet provides you with hiking trails, exercise tracks, sauna, rowing boats and barbecue areas. Nearby you will also find Långasjönäs campsite where you can rent cottages or camp with a caravan, camper van or tent. There is a swimming area with accessibility jetty. In the 18th and 19th centuries, there were paper mills, distilleries, sawmills, starch mills in the area. Most of the buildings are now only ruins that are well worth a visit. Långasjönäs nature reserve is located about 10 kilometers north of Karlshamns city center.

Seaside promenade - Strandpromenaden

The seaside promenade is a lovely hiking trail along the coast in central Karlshamn. It is about 2 kilometers long and starts by the statue of the emigrants, Karl Oskar & Kristina, in Näsviken. The hiking trail goes all the way out to Vägga fishing harbor, where you will find a smokehouse, fish restaurant, café and campsite. Along the trail there are several public barbecue spots and places with great view to enjoy. Along the way you will pass Cafe Villa Utsikten (only open in the summer, but a very nice viewpoint all year round), paddle courts, Väggabadet (swimming pools) and Karlshamn’s Kallbadhus (outdoor swimming bath).
