Al-Qurain Martyrs Museum

The Al-Qurain Martyrs Museum is a profoundly moving and sobering historical site, preserving the original house that was the scene of a brutal, day-long battle during the 1991 Iraqi occupation. The building itself is the primary exhibit, left in a semi-destroyed state with visible bullet holes and structural damage. It commemorates the resistance fighters of the Al-Messilah Group who chose to fight rather than surrender. A guided tour is highly recommended to fully understand the narratives of sacrifice and resilience, making it an essential visit for those seeking to comprehend a pivotal moment in modern Kuwaiti history.

Named after the Norse god Freyr, the island, which served as the regional centre of Jämtland throughout much of recorded history, boasts the northernmost raised runestone in the world, known as the "Frösö Runestone”. Easily accessible by foot, car, or bus, the island is a short walk across the pedestrian bridge from Östersund. The renowned Swedish composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger's enchantment with the island led to the creation of "Sommarhagen", now a museum and one of Östersund's most visited attractions.

Former Islamic Schools

Tunis reveals its scholarly heritage through a collection of beautifully preserved madrasas, each bearing witness to centuries of intellectual pursuit. Over 20 madrasas are spread over the Medina of Tunis, some of them seven centuries old. The role these madrasas played has evolved over time. The Madrasa Slimania, founded by 18th-century ruler Ali Pasha, stands out with its ornate prayer hall and elevated entrance porch. Where student cells once housed scholars, medical professionals now work beneath the same vaulted ceilings. Nearby, the Madrasa El Bachia has transitioned from Quranic school to artisan workshops, its courtyard fountain silent but its creative spirit alive. The Madrasa Palmier (or Madrasa Ennakhla) maintains its original purpose as a centre for Quranic studies, its namesake palm still shading the courtyard behind formidable studded doors. Meanwhile, El Khaldounia represents a bridge between tradition and modernity. Established in 1896 near Souk Al Attarine, this progressive institution now serves as a bilingual library, honouring Ibn Khaldoun’s legacy of critical thought.
