Opening Hours:The working week is generally from Sunday to Thursday, with some businesses open Saturday mornings. Government offices: 7:30am–2:30pm. Banks: 9:30am–4:30pm. Private businesses: 8am–noon and 4am–8pm.

Do & See

The major landmarks of Mecca include several of the holiest places in the world, like the Kaaba, which contains the Black Stone, and the Cave of Hira, where Prophet Muhammad received his first revelation. To these revered places other, newer but not less impressive landmarks have been added, most notably the enormous Abraj Al-Bait complex with the Makkah Clock Royal Tower imposingly rising above it.

The Kaaba, the cubic structure at the heart of Mecca's Al-Haram Mosque, is the holiest site in Islam and the focal point towards which Muslims worldwide pray. It stands at the centre of the Mataf, the courtyard where pilgrims perform the Tawaf, the ritual of circumambulation. Embedded in its eastern corner is the Black Stone, a revered relic set in a silver frame, which pilgrims strive to touch or kiss as part of the rites. As the direction of prayer and the ultimate destination of the Hajj pilgrimage, it represents the spiritual axis of the Muslim faith.
