Montgomery, Texas, proudly holds the title as the birthplace of the Lone Star Flag, a symbol Texans hold dear due to their strong sense of state pride and history. The town’s origins trace back to July 1837, when W.W. Shepperd established Montgomery within the Lake Creek Settlement. Soon after, Shepperd partnered with John Wyatt Moody, a former County Clerk of Montgomery County, Alabama, to officially name the town “Montgomery,” in honor of Moody's previous home. By 1838, Montgomery had grown to become one of Texas' first counties, playing a crucial role in the state's early development. The Lone Star Flag itself was born from this rich historical setting. In 1839, Dr. Charles B. Stewart, a local physician and statesman, was commissioned to design the official flag for the Republic of Texas. Stewart’s iconic design—featuring a single white star—was adopted, and his original sketch remains on display at the N.H.Davis Pioneer Complex & Museum. Montgomery’s contribution to Texas heritage, through the birth of both the city and the Lone Star Flag, continues to be celebrated across the state today.
