Citizens of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries do not need a visa to enter France, only a valid ID. Many other countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, and New Zealand, benefit from visa-free entry for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period. Visitors from visa-exempt countries must hold a valid passport and, starting in late 2025, will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) authorisation online before travelling. For those requiring a visa, such as travellers from some Middle Eastern, African or Asian nations, a Schengen visa must be obtained prior to arrival. All travellers should ensure their passport is valid for at least three months beyond their intended stay.

    Public Transport

    Nantes boasts a comprehensive and efficient public transport network, making it a great option for visitors getting around the city. Run by Semitan under the TAN brand, the system includes three tram lines, two Busway (bus rapid transit) routes, a wide-reaching bus network, two Navibus river shuttles, and a night bus service. The network also connects with suburban trains in the Nantes Métropole area, and all services operate on a unified fare system for easy transfers. For travellers, there are several ticket options: single tickets valid for one hour, 24-hour passes, and group day tickets for up to four people. Public transport is also free every weekend—from midnight Saturday to the end of service on Sunday—excluding the airport shuttle and a few special routes. Tickets are available at tram and Busway stops, on board buses, in TAN agencies, or via the official TAN app. Having said that, Nantes is known for being a bike-friendly city, with an extensive network of cycle paths and a bike-sharing scheme (Bicloo), making it easy to explore the city on two wheels.
