Built around 1865, this fortress played an important role in the history of Riyadh. The recapture of the city happened here at the turn of the century. The sand coloured brick constructing with its four towers is a popular tourist attraction and provides a glimpse on the past of Saudi Arabia. The word musmak means 'strong or fortified.'

Art and nature intertwine in the spectacular setting of the Volcano House, managed by the César Manrique Foundation. Built into an old lava flow, this former home of renowned artist César Manrique offers a unique insight into his life and creative vision. The upper storey of this 3,000 square metre building showcases traditional Lanzarote architecture, while the lower storey is ingeniously built around five natural volcanic bubbles connected by tunnels. Marvel at the swimming pool, ballroom, and barbeque area, all surrounded by abundant plant life and striking basalt. The foundation houses an array of Spanish paintings and exhibition pieces, alongside fascinating photos, magazine articles, and audio clips that shed light on Manrique's life and artistic philosophy. Known as the oldest Lutheran Church in the Americas, the Fredrick Lutheran Church was established in 1666 by Danish minister and coloniser, Kjeld Jensen. The yellow Georgian style building with its large staircase that you can visit today was opened in 1793. The earlier two buildings that were, unfortunately, destroyed by fire.

On the waterfront, only a few minutes from Harpa sits the most famous sculpture in Iceland, the Sólfarið or the Sun Voyager. Made of steel and resembling a Viking ship — although this was not the artist's intention — the Sun Voyager is, according to its creator Jón Gunnar Árnason, an ode to the sun, a dreamboat symbolising the promise of undiscovered territory, the dream of hope, progress, and freedom. This is also one of the best spots for a picture in Reykjavík, with Mount Esja providing the perfect backdrop.
