Biskopstuna

Tuna Castle was probably built in the late 1200s and in the middle ages the castle was an important seat for the archbishops. Tuna Castle was one of Upplands four farms that collected tax to the church. Around the turn of 1400/1500 the castle was the center for fights between Sweden and Denmark, when the bishops was loyal to the Danish union king. Gustav Vasa finally took control of Tuna. His son John III donated the property to Claes Flemming, which meant that Tuna became a nobility estate. In the 1600s a new main building was built nearby and the old bishop castle was extinguished. Excavations were made in 1921, 1967 and 1972.
