Sankt Johns sjukhus

Sankt Johns sjukhus är en av de äldsta bevarade sjukhusbyggnaderna i Europa. Museet ger en rörlig bild av hur livet såg ut i en medeltida sjukhusavdelning. Ett stort antal möbler, silverarbeten, tenn, tavlor, statyer, etc. framkallar bilder av vården av kroppar och själar som ägde rum här, genom århundradena. Sjukhuskapellet är ett virtuell monument till det konstnärliga geniet Hans Memling. Denna 1400-talskonstnär skapade många av sina största verk för St Johns sjukhus, inklusive hans berömda "St Ursula skrin". På vinden kan besökarna beundra en av de äldsta mest imponerande takkonsolerna i världen, medan den gamla apotekskammaren och örtagården också är väl värda ett besök.

Vårfrukyrkan

Det 115,5 meter höga tegeltornet Vårfrukyrkan är en perfekt illustration av Brygges hantverk. Kyrkan uppvisar en värdefull konstsamling: Michelangelos världsberömda "Madonna med barnet", otaliga målningar, målade gravsättningar från 1200-talet samt Maria av Burgunds och Charles den djärvas gravar. Useful to know: at the moment, large-scale renovation works are still being carried out, so the church is only partially accessible and many works of art cannot be viewed. The choir was renovated in 2015 and the remarkable church interior can now once again be admired in all its splendour.

Saint Saviour’s Cathedral

Bruges’ oldest parish church (12th-15th century) has amongst its treasures a rood loft with an organ, medieval tombs, Brussels tapestries and a rich collection of Flemish paintings (14th-18th century). The treasure-chamber displays, amongst others, paintings by Dieric Bouts, Hugo van der Goes and other Flemish primitives. Useful to know: restoration work is currently being carried out in the cathedral. This can influence the opening hours of the treasure-chamber.

Adornes område – Jerusalemkapellet

The Adornes domain consists of the 15th-century Jerusalem Chapel (a jewel of medieval architecture built by this rich merchant family), the Adornes mansion and a series of adjacent almshouses. In the new multimedia museum, you can follow in the footsteps of Anselm Adornes and learn all about the world in which he lived. You will go on a pilgrimage, take part in a joust and meet many notable persons of the time, such as the King of Scotland, the Lords of Gruuthuse and the Dukes of Burgundy.
