World Heritage Site Laponia

In Swedish Lapland, the nature and the Sami culture is so unique and so important to our whole world, that the area was designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO, a heritage that should remain forever. Laponia consists of four national parks and two nature reserves. It is a very widespread region that gives you great opportunities for hikes and a variety of activities.

Nationalparkerna

There are no fewer than eight national parks in Lapland, and each one is a unique nature experience. The isolated wilderness of Sarek with the mighty Rapa Valley, the liberating moorlands in Padjelanta, Muddus’ forests and the mountain range Akka in Stora Sjöfallet offer a singular nature that you cannot find anywhere else in Sweden.

Norrsken och Midnattssol

Light plays a central roll in this part of Sweden. The winter nights are lit up thanks to the northern lights that flow over the sky in different colours. If you are really quiet you can hear how they crackle. Join one of the northern lights tours that are arranged. If you are north of the Polar Circle, the nights during the summer months never really get dark when the midnight sun squanders its light.

Gammelstads kyrkstad, Luleå

This old village is a cultural historical rarity, and designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO. An important heritage for future generations. The modern Luleå we know today grew out of Gammelstad. It has a number of interesting architectural environments which bear witness to times gone by. Here guided tours are organised. You can visit the old church and learn more about handicraft traditions. Do not miss the nice restaurants and coffee shops or cozy boutiques filled with crafts.

Ájtee, The Swedish Fjäll- and Samimuseum

A fascinating museum in Jokkmokk, dedicated to the Sami culture and the rich nature of the mountains. Here you get a better understanding of the native people and the conditions they live under, both today and in earlier times. Enter a world where the river, silver and mystical figures are prominent. In the museum shop you can find skilled craftwork and other memorable items.

Renslädefärd

In Swedish Lapland you get many opportunities to take a sleigh ride with reindeer, an excellent chance to get to know the region’s most obvious wildlife. Allow yourself to be driven through a snowy landscape, an experience beyond the ordinary. Check with your local tourist office to find the nearest tour operator.

Mines in Kiruna and Gällivare

Welcome to an exciting adventure underground and to mines that have provided industry with vital ore. Take the bus to a depth of about 500 meter, straight down into the iron ore mine in Kiruna. The copper mine in Gällivare is just as interesting, a huge open-cast mine, which also has deposits of gold and silver. These you can only visit during the summer.

Boden’s Fortress, The Red Mountain Fort And The Defense Museum

Exciting museums that show the defense of Sweden throughout the ages. These areas teem with cannons, vehicles and uniforms. Stroll around the once so secret Boden’s Fortress and come along on a guided tour of The Red Mountain Fort.‎

Storforsen, Älvsbyn

Europe’s largest untamed rapids attract large crowds every year. They are about 40 kilometers from Älvsbyn. Its total drop is 82 meters and around the rapids shallows and cliffs have developed. From the cliff’s edge “The dead fall”, many test their courage with a jump straight into the rapids. A rafting museum and pleasant restaurant are also located here.

Skärgården,Luleå

The archipelago’s more than 700 islands and the wide open sea attract many visitors during the winter as well as summer. It is easy to reach the islands during the summer with the ferry boat lines. They give you a chance to boat around and go ashore and visit one of the many cafes. In the winter, it is possible to drive on the ice or let yourself go long-distance skating, ice sailing, or ice fishing. There is a large variety of refreshing activities for both the body and soul.

Treriksröset

A clear goal for many hikers in Swedish Lapland is to reach the country’s northernmost point. At treriksröset Sweden, Norway and Finland meet in one point. It is a magnificent view with the mountains in the distance and the marker erected on a smaller island, which you reach using a footbridge. Hike there during the summer, or travel there by snowmobile during the winter and enjoy the stillness.

Dog sled

Riding on a sled pulled by a number of lively energetic dogs is a popular winter pastime and is available in several formats. It is a breathtaking journey through forests and over plains. Feel your pulse drop as you stop at the hut for a “kåsa” (small cup) of brewed coffee. Impressions from this dizzying ride don’t dissolve easily. During the summer you can take the same trip, but on a sled running on wheels.

Kungsleden

If you enjoy hiking in woods and along the countryside, you must get out on the Kungsleden trail, which runs about 425 km, from Abisko to Hemavan. You will pass through rich scenery with the Lapland’s mountain wilderness as base and meet a wide range of wildlife and vegetation. Mountain lodges, four trail stations and two hostels are situated along the trail to provide rest after an adventurous day.

Wintersports in Dundret and Björkliden

Two very popular sites that offer every winter sport you can think of. Choose from traditional downhill skiing, off-piste and snowboarding slopes with a lot of jumps. Take a snowmobile ride or why not travel by helicopter. There are many forms of accommodation and restaurants with good food here.
