Skansen Open-Air Museum
Meet historic Sweden! Skansen is home to 150 buildings and farms transported from different parts of the country. Stroll among the beautiful gardens with flower beds and functional plants. Junibacken
The Story Train takes you on an amazing journey through the magical fairy tale world of Astrid Lindgren, author of popular stories such as Pippi Longstocking. Meet Mardie, Emil, Karlsson on the Roof and many others. Exhibition: Skrot på Junibacken (through autumn 2013).
Stockholms stadsmuseum
You are welcome to deepen your sense of Stockholm, with a visit to the museum! We tell the stories about the city and Stockholmers’—from the 1200s until today. Here is something for all ages, including a playroom for the children. And for adults, there are city walks on the theme of Stieg Larsson’s, Millennium and ABBA. We also have a well-stocked shop with gifts and a café. Free admission to the Museum.
Millennium Tour and ABBA City Walk
The Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Tour is the Stockholm City Museum’s guided city-walk in the foot-steps of Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomqvist. During the tour you will get additional background information about the characters and the author. On the way you will also learn more about historical and contemporary Stockholm and its inhabitants. ABBA City Walk is a guided tour in the foot-steps of ABBA and of the 1970’s Stockholm. The tour starts at the City Hall, passes the Old Town and stops at Blasieholmen. Tickets are sold in advance at the Stockholm City Museum or online at www.ticnet.se.
The museum of Medieval Stockholm
The museum of Medieval Stockholm has re-opened in newly renovated premises on Helgeandsholmen island at Norrbro. The re-created setting and the unique exhibits tell of the town’s emergence and its development in the Middle Ages. The new exhibition describes with compassion how people lived and made a livelihood. Modern technology is used in an exciting way to bring life to their day-to-day existence and destinies, the mundane and the festive, the happiness and the misery. The museum displays parts of the ancient city wall and an instructive presentation tells of the sources and methods that have given us the history of Stockholm.
Bonniers Konsthall Contemporary Art Gallery
Since 2006, Bonniers Konsthall, a leading site for Swedish and international contemporary art, offers Stockholm’s most exciting and cutting-edge exhibition program. The glass building, designed by Johan Celsing Architects, also contains a gallery shop and a cafe and restaurant.
Fotografiska
In May 2010 Stockholm’s new top attraction – Fotografiska (photo museum) opened. Fotografiska is one of the world’s largest museums for contemporary photography, with four unique head shows and about 20 smaller exhibitions annually. Besides the large exhibition space houses a photographic book and souvenir shop, restaurant and a photo gallery. The bar on the top floor you will also find one of the city’s best views.
Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde
Prince Eugene’s former home is one of Sweden’s most popular art museums. Visit the prince’s reception rooms and see his collection as well as temporary exhibitions. A beautiful flower and sculpture garden surrounds the museum.
Tom Tits Experiment
Two great buildings with a park filled with 600 experiments and discoveries to thrill you. Inquisitive folk of all ages will find enough adventures here to explore together for a whole day. Water experiments in the park will keep you cool on hot summer days. There is a café, restaurant, a room for eating your own food and a shop.
The Bergian garden
Botanical garden with greenhouses. Experience plants from all over the world: Edvard Anderson’s greenhouse with plants from Mediterranean climate and the tropics, the world’s largest water lily in the unique Victoria House. Lush kitchen and herb garden, Japanese pond and much more.
Moderna Museet
The Moderna Museet is a place for lovers of art and culture, whether young or old. Here you will find one of Europe’s most distinguished collection of modern and contemporary art with key works from the hands of Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol and many others. The museum is situated on the beautiful island of Skeppsholmen downtown Stockholm. There is a Restaurant, an Espresso Bar and a Shop.
Nordiska museet
Welcome to Sweden’s largest museum of cultural history! Discover Swedish trends and traditions and enjoy exhibitions on a wide range of subjects, for example fashion, interiors, furniture, table settings, textiles, folk art, doll’s houses and the Sami, one of the world’s indigenous peoples.
Gamla Stan
Gamla Stan is one of the largest and best preserved medieval city centers in Europe, and one of the foremost attractions in Stockholm—this is where Stockholm was founded in 1252.
All of Gamla Stan, and the adjacent island of Riddarholmen, are like a living pedestrian-friendly museum full of sights, attractions, restaurants, cafés, bars, and places to shop. Gamla Stan is also popular with aficionados of handicrafts, curios and souvenirs. The narrow, winding cobblestone streets with their buildings in so many different shades of gold, give Gamla Stan its unique and humbling character. Even now, cellar vaults and frescoes from the Middle Ages can be found behind the visible facades, and, on snowy winter days, the district feels like a chapter from a fairy tale book. There are several beautiful churches and museums in Gamla Stan, including Sweden’s national cathedral—Stockholm Cathedral—and the Nobel Museum.
The Royal Palace
The most impressive of the attractions in the district is the Royal Palace, one of the largest palaces in the world with over 600 rooms.
The official residence of His Majesty the King, was constructed in the 18th century. Visit the Reception Rooms with their magnificent interiors from the 18th and 19th centuries, the Hall of State with Queen Christina’s silver throne, and the apartments of the Orders of Chivalry. Also, see a collection of classical sculptures at the Gustav III’s Museum of Antiquities the Museum Tre Kronor which tells the story of the remnants of the Tre Kronor Castle, destroyed by fire in 1697 the Treasury and The Royal Armoury.
Stockholm from the water
Indeed, a city built on 14 islands offers an infinite number of stunning water views. Stockholm has scores of waterfront walkways, with spectacular and ever-changing scenery. Be sure to take a boat sightseeing tour of the city.
Stadshuset (The City Hall)
The City Hall is one of the best known symbols of the City. The Nobel Banquet takes place in the Blue Hall and the Golden Hall. You can only visit City Hall through a guided tour though, and tours may be cancelled when events are planned. Also visit the Tower Museum. You can visit the tower in the summer without a guide (limited space for visitors).
Sightseeing in Different Ways
Stockholm is a city with its stunning views offers ways to travel and discover the city. Stockholm is one of the few cities where the ballooning is permitted. See the city from the roof tops on a guided tour, take part in a tour on foot, by boat or bus. Travel to the top of Ericsson Globe in the new SkyView-attraction or discover the archipelago from a Rib-boat. Rent a bike or kayak and explore the city on your own.
The world`s first National City Park
The world’s first national city park (the ecopark) is a green lung forming an arc more than six miles long, stretching around and through the city. The park abuts the adjoining forests around the city, ensuring an exceptional wealth of species. You can encounter deer, hares, foxes and even moose, spot rare birds, butterflies and insects, all from right inside the city. You can walk for days through the Ekoparken, discovering ever new and lovely spots. There’s an abundance of things to see: museums, an amusement park, theaters and entertainment, castles, inns and hotels, sports facilities, numerous residences from different historical periods, hills with centuries-old oak trees, lakes, streams, bays, marshes and canals, meadows with grazing cows, horses and sheep, secluded swimming spots, rocky hilltops and areas with wild, virgin nature where you will have difficulty remembering you’re in the middle of a big city.
Go island hopping in Stockholms archipelago
Of course Stockholm is wonderful. However, many visitors are unaware of its most spectacular feature – the archipelago. This magnificent maritime landscape of more than 30,000 islands, islets and skerries, of which just some one thousand are inhabited, is unique in the world. Visitors can hardly believe their eyes the first time they experience Stockholm’s archipelago on a sunny summer’s day. Not to mention on a crystal-clear winter’s day. Within two hours by boat or car from Stockholm you can be anywhere in the archipelago – to your very own paradise, where you feel like you’re a thousand miles from the nearest city. Stockholm’s fleet of classic white archipelago boats includes many lovely, well-preserved old workhorses, some dating back more than a century and still steam powered. Many boat tours offer lunch or dinner.
Recreation
In addition to classic spa and treatment facilities several hotels luxurious spa facilities. At the Clarion Sign Hotel’s top floor you will find the reputed Selma City Spa where you can enjoy the roof top pool overlooking the City Hall. The most luxurious spa experience is found at Grand Hotel. Raison d’Etre is te host of a 1400 square ft spa.
Fishing
People fishing outside the Royal Palace is a classic Stockholm sight. These waters are good for salmon fishing—otherwise fishers wouldn’t be standing there every day, year round. The record for a salmon caught in downtown Stockholm is said to be 48 pounds!
Swimming
Stockholmers are proud that you can swim in the center of town. Stockholm and its surroundings have lots of swimming spots that are popular with sun worshippers on summer days, for instance the beaches of Långholmsbadet, Rålambshovsbadet and Reimersholme. Find your own private
