Going for a “fika” is a very Swedish thing. Though untranslatable, it basically means to meet up for a coffee and a piece of cake or pastry. Sweden enjoys a highly developed culture when it comes to baked goods, and everywhere in Stockholm you’ll find cafés and cake shops brimming with atmosphere, character and quality, whether traditional or contemporary-creative.

Vurma

High cozy factor among the colorful cushions and sofas. With a personal and friendly style, considerate staff and tasty sandwiches with names like ‘buddy,’ ‘stranger’ and ‘scruffy,’ Vurma has become so popular that the first café in Vasastan has spun off to Kungsholmen, Södermalm and Östermalm.

Rosendals Trädgårdscafé

Rosendals Trädgård is one of Stockholm’s true gems! The garden café is located in a fantastic setting on shady Djurgården island, and offers salads, soups, sandwiches and pastries that taste homemade. The café uses organic and biodynamic ingredients. Produce from the garden is used in season, and the pastries come from the restaurant’s own bakery. Many Stockholmers make the pilgrimage there on sunny days, but there’s room for numerous guests. In the summer you can sit on the grass in the apple orchard.

Chokladkoppen

Cozy little café at idyllic Stortorget Square, not far from the Royal Palace in the medieval Old Town. Exquisite sandwiches and pastries, and in summer a popular alfresco section. Gayfriendly.

Vetekatten

Vetekatten at Kungsgatan 55 in central Stockholm is one of the scores of well-preserved, tradition-packed coffee shops where you can sample traditional Swedish pastries of superior quality.

Sturekatten

Sturekatten is a hidden oasis: a true old-fashioned café and bake shop housed in a two-story Östermalm apartment building. The décor dates from the turn of the previous century, and the wait staff are clothed in the professional uniform of the time. Classic bake shop goods and a stress-free environment for the customer who wants to chat in peace and quiet or dive into a good book or magazine.

Café String

A relaxed SoFo favorite, where the young crowd drinks coffee from a thermos or huge cups of tea in a venue decorated with vintage 50s and 60s gear, where everything is for sale. You can buy your teacup or chair as a souvenir. Breakfast buffet on Saturdays and Sundays.
